Mineral/Rio Grande
county,
Wagon Wheel Gap to South Fork section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II 12 miles
Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Colorado is often tougher than elsewhere, so don't forget that a large number of rivers in this state are not easy. The beautiful scenery of Colorado and the water flowing gracefully down Rio Grande will make you feel great. The campgrounds here at Rio Grande are pretty good. The beauty of the San Juan and Jemez Mountains is a great plus for this river. The Wagon Wheel Gap to South Fork section is the only paddling section along Rio Grande. This section of Rio Grande in Colorado is 12 miles long and has been rated as a
class II section by American Whitewater. If you hurry you can run this stretch in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so pack your camp stove. Getting a good workout and just hanging out with mother nature will make you glad you came. Whether you're whitewater rafting or
kayaking this area has a pretty small number of paddling places. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick.
