The average Colorado whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master than those in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that rivers here are less forgiving. The nature scenery of Archuleta County and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. A good workout and spending some quality time in nature have people coming from far and near. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. This stretch of San Juan River in Colorado is 1 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class
II-III section. The river winds through the San Juan and Jemez Mountains and you get great scenery. There are a few other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. This section is very short so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. You might be
into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this is an area with plenty of rivers for that. There are some good hotels near the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car.
Briefly about the general area: San Juan River is a location that is rather waterless generally; the month of August is the wettest with most of the rain while June is the month with the least amount of precipitation. Just can't get enough of the San Juan and Jemez Mountains. A short trip to Pagosa Springs is always worthwhile.
