The starting point is not too far from Montrose, as you can see on the road map further down. The nature scenery of San Miguel/ Montrose County and the water flowing gracefully down San Miguel River attract people from near and far. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling places. The Silverpick Road     to Fall Creek Road stretch of San Miguel River is 7.3 miles long and is a class III section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. Getting your paddling muscles activated and spending some quality time in nature will make you glad you came. The wild scenery of the Uncompahgre Plateau Mountains is great. If you'll be staying in a hotel you're in luck, lodging is available very near the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. This is a pretty decent length section, you can easily run it on an afternoon. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. This is one of a small number of paddling sections in this river system, there are a few others too. Briefly about the general area: Not much rain falls here at San Miguel River; the month with most of the rain is July, and June   is when it's the driest. Throughout the summertime here at San Miguel River, high temperatures frequently reach the 80's; the night is slightly chillier of course, generally in the 40's. The cold days of the winter come with highs in the 30's with winter lows in the 0's overnight here at San Miguel River. Going for a hike on the Alder Creek Trail is always a wonderful adventure; you can go for a hike on the Wilson Mesa Trail.
