This section of Slate River in Colorado is 2 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class V section of whitewater. The wonderful Gunnison County scenery and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so you'd better keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very forgiving. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. There are no other sections to paddle along Slate River than
the Beaver Ponds to Oh Be Joyful Campground section. This is a short paddling stretch so it's not like you're gonna spend hours on the river in one stretch. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in
advance because these hotels fill up quick. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature are sure to keep you coming back for more.
Briefly about the general area: Nearby Poverty Gulch is a brilliant site to go if you're at Slate River, and do take a hike on the Trail Riders Trail. Through the summertime here at Slate River, high temperatures regularly get into the 70's, and the nighttime is rather chillier of course, commonly in the 40's. The winter brings highs down to the 30's while Slate River night low temperatures through
the winter are in the-10's. Not much rain falls here at Slate River; the wettest month of the year is typically August, that's the one that rains the most, and February is the month with the least moisture.
