Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often more difficult than elsewhere, so keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very forgiving. This stretch of Slate River in Gunnison County is 2 miles long and it is classified as a class V section by American Whitewater. There are no other sections to paddle along Slate River than the Beaver Ponds to Oh Be Joyful Campground section. There are many good hotels to choose from, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. This is a somewhat short section so you'd better
be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. The wonderful Colorado scenery and the cool fresh water have people coming here. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a large number of paddling places. The campgrounds
here at Slate River are pretty good.
Briefly about the general area: Summertime at Slate River arrives with high temperatures in the 70's, and all through summer nights temperatures are in the 40's. During the winter highs are commonly in the 30's with temperatures at Slate River dipping down into the-10's through winter nights. Around Slate River you don’t get a lot of rainfall; August is the month that gets the most rain, and February meanwhile is the driest month. You might want to pay a visit to Poverty Gulch if you're here at Slate River, and magnificent hiking is available along the Trail Riders Trail.
