This stretch of Slate River in Gunnison County is 2 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class V section. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way there are lots of good spots for that around here. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so better not forget that a large number of rivers in this state are not easy. This is a pretty short section so no need to bring snacks. And of course, there are campgrounds
nearby. The natural beauty of Gunnison County and the cool fresh water attract people from near and far. Getting your paddling muscles activated and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. If you'll be staying in a hotel you're in luck, lodging is
available very near the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set.
Briefly about the general area: You might want to pay a visit to Poverty Gulch since you're here at Slate River, and you can go for a hike on the Trail Riders Trail. Throughout the warm days of summer highs here at Slate River get into the 70's, and during the night it cools down to the 40's. The winter brings highs down to the 30's while Slate River night low temperatures through the winter are in the-10's. It is very dried out here at Slate River typically; the month with most of the rain is August; February meanwhile is the driest month.
