Colorado whitewater, South Platte River

Jefferson county, Cheeseman Reservoir to Deckers section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS IV     5.8 miles
The Cheeseman Reservoir to Deckers section of South Platte River in Jefferson County is 5.8 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class IV section. The nature scenery of Jefferson County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Denver-Aurora. A good workout and just being out on the river for a
while will have you coming back for more. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. This stretch is mid length, it's perfect for a one day trip. Whitewater paddling here in the Front Range is a great experience. Whitewater
rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more challenging than the national average, so if you're not from around here don't forget that quite a few of the sections here are not easy. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. There are so many stretches to paddle in this river system, the Cheeseman Reservoir to Deckers stretch is just one of many. No
matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of spots for that.

Briefly about the general area:
On a good day at South Platte River you can take a hike along the South Manitou Park
Trail, and Pike National Forest is worth checking out. All year is a glorious time in the Front Range if you have a thing about the outdoors. While you're here at South Platte River you will meet lots of people from nearby Sedalia. A tour to South Platte River wouldn’t be complete without a trip to close by Roxborough State Park; close by Lazy Gulch is a good location to go.
