Colorado whitewater - Williams Fork, Park Range, Grand County
Grand
county,
Horseshoe Campground to Williams Fork Reservoir section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II-IV 9 miles
If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Colorado you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so don't forget that rivers here are less forgiving. The Horseshoe Campground to Williams Fork Reservoir stretch of Williams Fork is 9 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II-IV section. The nature scenery of Grand County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream make the trip here worthwhile. On this section you do get some distance, it's perfect for a one day trip. If you're coming
from Silverthorne it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, as you can see on the road map further down. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a large number of paddling spots. There are no other sections to paddle along
Williams Fork than the Horseshoe Campground to Williams Fork Reservoir section. The wild scenery of the Park Range is great. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. Great exercise and spending some quality time in nature are great reasons to come.
Briefly about the general area: Brinker Gulch is a splendid place to pop by close by; there is a good hiking trail nearby called the Horseshoe Sulfur Trail. Williams Fork is regularly
a reasonably arid site; the month with most of the rain is August while February is commonly the driest month. At Williams Fork through the days of summer highs are in the 80's, and the nighttime is rather chillier of course, usually in the 40's. All through the wintertime
the highs are regularly in the 20's with winter lows in the-10's overnight here at Williams Fork. Be careful coming to the Park Range, you might not ever want to go back home again. On a wonderful day at Williams Fork you can take a hike along the Williams Peak Trail.
