If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so you'd better keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very forgiving. The 85 Road to Deer Lodge Park Road section of Yampa River in Moffat County is 4.8 miles long and it is classified as a class IV(V) section by American Whitewater. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. There are some good sections to paddle in this
river system, the 85 Road to Deer Lodge Park Road section is one of them. This stretch is mid length, you can easily run it on an afternoon. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. The nature scenery of Colorado and the playfulness of the water are
reasons enough to come here and paddle. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this is an area with not too many other rivers for that.
Briefly about the general area: Yampa River is a location that is reasonably dried out frequently; of all the months in a year October is the one with the most rain, and January is when it's the driest. Through the long summer days at Yampa River temperatures are frequently in the
80's. Once the sun is down it sinks down to the 40's. High temperatures through the wintertime are normally in the 30's; nighttime lows in the 0's for Yampa River. If you're here, you might as well stop by Horse Gulch.
