The nature scenery of Connecticut and the cool fresh water have people coming here. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Torrington, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. On this section you do get some distance, good for a one day paddling trip. This section of Bantam River in Connecticut is 5.4 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-II section.
There are no other stretches to paddle along Bantam River than the Stoddard Road to Shepaug River stretch. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. A bit of exercise and just being out on the river for a while have people coming from far and near.
Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often easier than elsewhere, so don't forget that many of the sections here are safe for beginners.
Briefly about the general area: High temperatures at Bantam River through the warmest time of the year are in the 80's. Throughout the moonlight hours it's usually in the 50's. Through the winter highs are generally in the 30's while the cold winter nights at Bantam River are in the 10's. Bantam River is a wet spot that gets much precipitation; most of the rain falls during August, and the driest
month of the year is February. Mt. Tom State Park is a good place to stretch your legs a bit, and during your stay here do stop by nearby Morris Town Beach. Spend the day on the beach at Litchfield Town Beach since you're here at Bantam River.
