The Route 183 Bridge to Route 8 Bridge section of Sandy Brook River in Connecticut is 5.6 miles long and is a class IV section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master in this state than those in other states, so don't forget that a lot of the rivers here are suitable for beginners. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby.
The starting point is not too far from Torrington, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good spots. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away
from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, you can easily run it on an afternoon. The natural beauty of Litchfield County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. Sandy Brook River doesn't have a lot of paddling sections, the Route 183 Bridge to Route 8 Bridge section is the only one. Getting your paddling muscles activated and spending
some quality time in nature have a lot of people coming here.
