The put-in location is a short drive from Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, as you can see on the road map further down. The nature scenery of District of Columbia and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. Getting some good exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. This stretch is mid length, you can easily run it on an afternoon. This stretch of Rock Creek in District of Columbia is 4 miles long and is a class II-III+(V) section of whitewater according to
American Whitewater. The Above Military Road to Pierce Mill Dam section is one of a few paddling sections in this river system. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby.
Briefly about the general area: Summertime at Rock Creek comes with high temperatures in the 80's.
When the night sets in temperatures dip down into the 60's. The cold days of the winter come with highs in the 40's, and overnight lows during the winter for Rock Creek tend to be in the 20's. This is a great river. Jumpin' Jack Spring is an inspiring location to check out during your stay, and lots of folks from Washington-Arlington-Alexandria come here. Hiking along the Valley Trail is pleasant fun, and you should certainly check out charming Bathing Beach since you're here.
