The wonderful Putnam/Baldwin County scenery and the playfulness of the water make the trip here worthwhile. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Athens-Clarke County, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The GA Route 81 to Oconee River stretch of Apalachee River in Georgia is 55.8 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-III section. A bit of exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are sure to keep you coming back for more. The rivers for whitewater
rafting and kayaking here in Georgia are often tougher than in other states, so keep in mind that rivers here are less forgiving. Now this is a pretty long section, so make sure you pack enough food along with your camping gear. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from
the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. This is one of a small number of paddling sections in this river system, there are a few others too.
Briefly about the general area: Apalachee River gets a great deal of water; March is the wettest month with most rain, and September is when it's the driest. During the summertime months highs here at Apalachee River get into the 80's. Once the sun is down it descends down to the 60's. During the winter highs are frequently in the 50's while the cold winter nights at Apalachee River are in the 30's.
