The wonderful Georgia scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water make the trip here worthwhile. The put-in is not too far from Athens-Clarke County, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Getting your paddling muscles activated and spending some quality time in nature are great reasons to come. This stretch of Apalachee River is 55.8 miles long and it is classified as a class I-III section by American Whitewater. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this is an area with
plenty of spots for that. There are a few other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Georgia you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so better not forget that lots of rivers here are not
for beginners. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Now this is a pretty long section, so it looks like you will be camping out. The campgrounds here at Apalachee River are pretty good.
Briefly about the general area: At Apalachee River through the summertime months highs are in the 80's while night lows are ordinarily in the 60's. Daytime highs through the winter are in the 50's with winter lows in the 30's overnight here at Apalachee
River. Apalachee River gets a large amount of water; the wettest month of the year is ordinarily March, that's the one that rains the most; September on the other hand is the driest.
