The Highway 28 Putin to Earl's Ford section of Chattooga River in Rabun GA / Oconee SC County is 7 miles long and has been rated as a class II section by American Whitewater. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Georgia are often tougher than in other states, so keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very forgiving. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if
you make reservations in advance you're all set. This stretch has has enough mileage, good for a one day paddling trip. The beautiful scenery of Rabun GA / Oconee SC County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are reasons enough to come here and paddle.
Great exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are great reasons to come. There are plenty of other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. The beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains scenery is an added bonus. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling rivers.
Briefly about the general area: Why not take a refreshing hike along the Burrells Ford Trail, and a short tour to Big Shoals is always
worthwhile. Chattooga River sees pretty high levels of rainfall; March is when you get the most rain here; the driest month is July. If you want a perfect time in the great outdoors just come on up to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Big Shoals is a great spot to stop by near Chattooga
River; do take a hike on the Three Forks Trail. High temperatures at Chattooga River through the days of summer are in the 80's. Once the sun is down it plunges down to the 50's. Through the winter this place gets highs in the 40's; overnight lows at Chattooga River through the wintertime commonly descend into the 20's. Lots of fun awaits you along this river.
