This section of Chestatee River is 32 miles long and has been rated as a class I-II(III) section by American Whitewater. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Gainesville, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Georgia are often more challenging than in other states, so don't forget that rivers here are less forgiving. The beautiful scenery of Lumpkin County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream will make you feel great.
The river winds through the Blue Ridge Mountains and you get great scenery. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while will have you coming back for more. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. A section like this is is of course not run in a single day, perfect
for a real wilderness adventure. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of spots for that. No need to look hard for hotels, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The Coppermine to Lake Lanier section is one of a few paddling sections in this river system.
Briefly about the general area: A good deal of rain falls at Chestatee River; the month with most of the rain is March, and October is when it's the driest. During the warmest
time of the year highs here at Chestatee River get into the 80's. Summer night lows dip down to the 60's. For the duration of the winter the highs are generally in the 40's while Chestatee River nighttime low temperatures through the winter are in the 20's.
