Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often more difficult than elsewhere, so keep in mind that rivers here are not as easy as elsewhere. The put-in location is a short drive from Gainesville, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good spots. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. There are some good hotels near the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels
fill up quick. A stretch this long is of course too much for a one day trip, so better bring your camping gear along. This section of Chestatee River in Lumpkin County is 32 miles long and is a class I-II(III) section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. Getting your
paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while have a lot of people coming here. The beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains scenery is an added bonus. There are a few other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. The natural beauty of Lumpkin County and the cool fresh water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle.
Briefly about the general area: Chestatee River is a wet place that gets a good deal of rainfall; March is the month that gets the most rain, and the driest of the months is October.
For the period of the warm months at Chestatee River highs are commonly in the 80's. Summer overnight lows fall down to the 60's. High temperatures through the winter are normally in the 40's while the cold winter nights at Chestatee River are in the 20's.
