The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master in this state than those in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that rivers here are not as easy as elsewhere. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Cleveland, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are lots of good places for that around here. The Hickory Creek Trailhead to East Cowpen Road section of Conasauga River
in Georgia is 10 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class III-IV(V) section. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. This is one of a small number of paddling stretches in this river system, there are a few others too. The natural
beauty of Murray County and the water flowing gracefully down Conasauga River are reasons enough to come here and paddle. This stretch is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so go ahead and pack your sleeping bag. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great attractions for lots of people.
Briefly about the general area: High temperatures
at Conasauga River all through the summertime are in the 80's. Summer overnight lows plunge down to the 60's. High temperatures through the winter are normally in the 40's while the cold winter nights at Conasauga River are in the 20's. Good hiking is available along the Gryder
Camp Trail. There's nice hiking along the Cloer Trail, and you could always look at Alaculsy Valley. Conasauga River gets a lot of water; the wettest month of the year is generally March, that's the one that rains the most; the driest of the months is October.
