The Above Hightower Road section of Etowah River in Lumpkin County is 2 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class III-IV+ section. The put-in location is a short drive from Gainesville, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The beautiful scenery of Georgia and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. When you're paddling down a Blue Ridge Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. Getting your paddling muscles
activated and just hanging out with mother nature have a lot of people coming here. There are a few other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. This is a short paddling stretch so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. You
might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this is an area with plenty of spots for that. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Georgia are harder than the national norm, so don't forget that rivers here are not as easy as elsewhere. There's camping available near Etowah River. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination.

here at Etowah River get into the 80's, and through the night it cools down to the 60's. For the duration of the wintertime the highs are frequently in the 40's with temperatures at Etowah River dipping down into the 20's through winter nights. Put some time aside to spend at Black
Falls since you're here at Etowah River. Etowah River sees pretty high levels of rain; most of the rain falls through March, and the driest month of the year is October.
