Lumpkin
county,
Above Hightower Road section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS III-IV+ 2 miles
The Above Hightower Road section of Etowah River in Lumpkin County is 2 miles long and is a class III-IV+ section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Gainesville, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The Blue Ridge Mountains scenery is wonderful. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. The natural beauty of Lumpkin County and the water flowing
gracefully down Etowah River make the trip here worthwhile. This is a somewhat short section so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of spots for that. If you've been out of state whitewater
rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more demanding, so don't forget that a large number of rivers in this state are not easy. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. This is one of a small number of paddling stretches in this river system, there are a few others too. Getting a good workout and just hanging out with mother nature are great reasons to come.
