Hightower Road to US 19 section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II(III) 10.5 miles
The Hightower Road to US 19 section of Etowah River is 10.5 miles long and has been rated as a class II(III) section by American Whitewater. The put-in is not too far from Gainesville, as you can see on the road map further down. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Georgia are often more challenging than in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less manageable. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. The scenic beauty of Georgia and the beautiful way the water current moves
down the stream make the trip here worthwhile. You can enjoy this section more if you take your time, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff. A bit of exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have people coming from far and near. This is one of a small number of paddling
stretches in this river system, there are a few others too. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. The beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains scenery is an added bonus. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots.
