If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more demanding, so better not forget that rivers here are less forgiving. The nature scenery of Lumpkin/ Dawson County and the water flowing gracefully down Etowah River are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The put-in is not too far from Gainesville, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling rivers. The US 19 to Highway
136 section of Etowah River is 13.3 miles long and is a class II(IV) section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. You can enjoy this stretch more if you take your time, so pack your sleeping bag. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. There are
a few other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. The wild scenery of the Blue Ridge Mountains is great. A bit of exercise and just hanging out with mother nature have a lot of people coming here.
Briefly about the general area: Etowah River is a quite wet place ordinarily with much rain; the month with most of the rain is March, and the driest month of the year is October. Throughout
the warmest time of the year at Etowah River highs are commonly in the 80's. When the night sets in temperatures dip down into the 60's. Throughout the wintertime highs are usually in the 40's, and during the dark hours in the winter at Etowah River temperatures dip to the 20's.
