If you're coming from Gainesville it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The nature scenery of Lumpkin/ Dawson County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water will make you feel great. This section of Etowah River in Georgia is 13.3 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II(IV) section. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. There are some good stretches to paddle in this river system, the US 19 to Highway
136 stretch is one of them. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Georgia are often tougher than in other states, so better not forget that rivers here are less forgiving. If you hurry you can run this section in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so pack
your sleeping bag. A good workout and spending some quality time in nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a large number of paddling spots. When you're paddling down a Blue Ridge Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set.

All the water falling down from the sky makes Etowah River a wet place; March is the month that gets the most rain; the driest of the months is October. For the period of the long summer days highs here at Etowah River reach the 80's, and throughout summer nights temperatures are in the 60's. Through the wintertime the highs are commonly in the 40's with winter lows in the 20's overnight here at Etowah River.
