Georgia whitewater - Jack's River, Great Smoky Mountains, Fannin County
Fannin
county,
Jones Mill/Bethlehem Church to Conasauga Confluence section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II-V 17.2 miles
The wonderful Georgia scenery and the playfulness of the water attract people from near and far. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Georgia are often more challenging than in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that rivers here are less forgiving. If you're coming from Cleveland it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come.
The Jones Mill/Bethlehem Church to Conasauga Confluence stretch of Jack's River in Fannin County is 17.2 miles long and it is classified as a class II-V section by American Whitewater. The beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains is a great plus for this river. This is the only paddling
stretch along Jack's River. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this is an area with plenty of spots for that. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. If you hurry you can run this stretch in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so pack your camp stove.
Briefly about the general area: Jack's River is a wet spot that gets lots of rain; the month with most of
the rain is March; October is the month with the least moisture. You might want to pay a visit to Crooked Dogwood Gap while you're here at Jack's River, and Beech Bottom is a delightful site to explore while in the vicinity. For the period of the summertime months at Jack's
River highs are typically in the 80's. Once the sun is down it plunges down to the 60's. Throughout the winter this place gets highs in the 40's while the cold winter nights at Jack's River are in the 20's. And if that's not sufficient there's a heap more entertaining stuff to
do in the Great Smoky Mountains. Go for a hike on the Rice Camp Trail, and no need to travel far to check out out of the ordinary stuff like Horseshoe Bend. Coming to this river is always a good idea. There are brilliant sites to discover along the Hickory Ridge Trail.
