The wonderful Gilmer County scenery and the playfulness of the water have people coming here. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Georgia are harder than the national norm, so if you're not from around here don't forget that quite a few of the sections here are not easy. This stretch of Mountaintown Creek in Georgia is 8 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-II section. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling places. Getting some good exercise and just
hanging out with mother nature will make you glad you came. The put-in is not too far from Dalton, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have
to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. There are a few other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well.
Briefly about the general area: During the warm days of summer highs here at Mountaintown Creek get into the 80's, and the nighttime is slightly cooler of course, frequently in the 60's. Daytime highs during the winter are in the 40's, and after the sun is down during the winter temperatures at Mountaintown Creek dip into the 20's. Mountaintown Creek sees pretty high levels of rain; March is the wettest month with most rain, and October meanwhile is the driest month.
