The natural beauty of Pickens/Gilmer/Gordon/Murray County and the cool fresh water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. The starting location is a short drive from Calhoun, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. This stretch of Talking Rock Creek in Georgia is 18 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class I-III section of whitewater. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way
this area has a large number of paddling spots. If you hurry you can run this section in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so pack your camp stove. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations
you might end up sleeping in your car. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more challenging than the national average, so keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less manageable. A good workout and just being out on the river for a while have people coming from far and near. There are a few other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well.
Briefly about the general area: Summertime highs at Talking Rock Creek regularly tend to be in the 80's, and all through the night it cools down to the 60's. For
the duration of the winter the highs are mostly in the 40's with winter lows in the 20's overnight here at Talking Rock Creek. Talking Rock Creek is a pretty wet place ordinarily with a lot of rainfall; the month of March is the wettest with most of the rain, and the driest month of the year is October.
