This section of Big Creek in Idaho is 54 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class III-IV section. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often tougher than in other states, so keep in mind that rivers here are not as easy as elsewhere. The nature scenery of Valley County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are reasons enough to come here and paddle. Now this is a pretty long section, so make sure you pack enough food along with your camping gear. The Salmon River Mountains scenery is
wonderful. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way there are not so many other good spots for that around here. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have
reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. Big Creek doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the Big Creek Airstrip to Cache Bar stretch is the only one. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come.
Briefly about the general area: Blackburn Saddle is a glorious spot to spend some time at; Big Creek is right by the Bear Trap Saddle Trail. Big Creek gets a common amount of annual precipitation; the wettest month of the year is generally
January, that's the one that snows the most; the driest month of the year is July. Not enough hours in a day to enjoy the Salmon River Mountains. Why not take a refreshing hike along the Coxey Creek Trail. Throughout the summer months at Big Creek temperatures are commonly
in the 70's, and through the night it cools down to the 30's. High temperatures through the wintertime are normally in the 20's while the cold winter nights at Big Creek are in the 0's.
