Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Idaho tend to be more challenging than the national average, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. The nature scenery of Valley County and the playfulness of the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. This stretch has has enough mileage, suitable for an afternoon trip. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The beautiful Salmon River Mountains scenery is an added bonus.
Briefly about the general area: Johnson Creek is right by the Parks Peak Trail; Deadhorse Rapids is a magnificent local attraction. The warmest time of the year brings highs in the 70's to Johnson Creek. Once the sun is down
it plunges down to the 30's. The cold days of the wintertime come with highs in the 30's, and through the dark hours in the winter at Johnson Creek temperatures sink to the 0's. This location, the Salmon River Mountains, has so much outdoors amusing stuff. Hiking along the
Caton Lake Trail is nice fun. From a rainfall point of view Johnson Creek is a reasonably common site; the month of January is the wettest with most of the snow, and the driest of the months is July.
