The wonderful Idaho/ Lemhi County scenery and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Idaho are often tougher than in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that rivers here are less forgiving. This is one of a small number of paddling stretches in this river system, there are a few others too. The Riggins to White Bird section of Salmon River in Idaho is 36 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class III-IV section. You might have to settle for a hotel
a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Great exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. There are campgrounds quite near the river where
you can camp. A stretch this long is of course too much for a one day trip, so it looks like you will be camping out. The beauty of the Clearwater Mountains is a great plus for this river. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling rivers.
Briefly about the general area: Around Salmon River you don’t get a lot of rainfall; of all the months in a year May is the one with the most rain while February is commonly the driest month. All through the summertime months at Salmon River highs are mostly in the 80's; the overnight
is rather chillier of course, regularly in the 40's. High temperatures during the winter are normally in the 30's while the cold winter nights at Salmon River are in the 20's. All the outdoors exciting stuff in the Clearwater Mountains will keep you coming back persistently.
Don't leave Salmon River without first going for a hike along the Lava Butte Trail. There are perfect places to discover along the Broken Leg Trail, and Little Slate Creek Saddle is a tremendous location to spend some time.
