This stretch of Salmon River in Idaho is 36 miles long and it is classified as a class III-IV section by American Whitewater. The scenic beauty of Idaho/ Lemhi County and the water flowing gracefully down Salmon River have people coming here. The average Idaho whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be harder to run than those in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you don’t
have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors will make you glad you came. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. There are some good stretches to paddle in this river system, the Riggins to White
Bird stretch is one of them. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are lots of good places for that around here. A section like this is is of course not run in a single day, so it looks like you will be camping out. When you're paddling down a Clearwater Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too.
Briefly about the general area: Summertime highs at Salmon River ordinarily tend to be in the 80's, and all through the night it cools down to the 40's. The winter comes with
highs in the 30's, and throughout the dark hours in the wintertime at Salmon River temperatures fall to the 20's. Not enough hours in a day to enjoy the Clearwater Mountains. There's splendid hiking along the Broken Leg Trail. The Lava Butte Trail offers hiking at its best,
and if you're here why not have a look at Little Slate Creek Saddle. Salmon River gets very little rain; the wettest month of the year is mostly May, that's the one that rains the most; the driest of the months is February.
