The nature scenery of Idaho County and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. This stretch of Salmon River in Idaho County is 50 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II-IV section of whitewater. Getting some good exercise and spending some quality time in nature will have you coming back for more. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way in this general area you won't find many other paddling places. This is the only paddling section along Salmon River. A stretch
this long is of course too much for a one day trip, perfect for a real wilderness adventure. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more demanding, so better not forget that many runs in this state are not easy. And of course,
there are campgrounds nearby. The beauty of the Wallowa Mountains is a great plus for this river. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick.
Briefly about the general area: During the warm days of summer highs here at Salmon River reach the 80's, and the overnight is a little cooler of course, commonly in the 40's. Daytime highs all through the wintertime are in the 30's, and night lows throughout the wintertime for Salmon
River tend to be in the 20's. Salmon River is mostly a rather dry place; most of the rain falls during May, and July is the month with the least moisture. Chamberlain Gulch is a nice spot to pop by close to Salmon River.
