DuPage/Kane
county,
Batavia Dam section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS I-II(IV) 0.05 miles
While there is limited whitewater, the Fox River has many put ins and take outs from just south of Elgin all the way to just north of the confluence of the Fox and the Illinois River. There are miles of quiet country scenery on the section of the river from Yorkville south (about 15 miles) There is an outfitter at the dam in Yorkville (Freeman's Sports)who rents canoes by the day and will provide shuttle service. There are sandstone cliffs near Sheridan. There are campgrounds along the river south of Yorkville for those who want to spend more than one day
on the river. Be sure to be aware of where the dams are, they are dangerous. There are no dams south of Yorkville except the Dayton Dam which is a hydroelectric dam that prevents passage beyond Wedron. Says Tom Ross
The starting location is a short drive from Chicago-Naperville-Joliet,
as you can see on the road map further down. The wonderful DuPage/Kane County scenery and the cool fresh water attract people from near and far. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this area has a pretty small number of paddling rivers. This section is very short so no need to bring snacks. There are no other stretches to paddle along Fox River than the Batavia Dam stretch. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Illinois are often easier than in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that
rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere. The campgrounds here at Fox River are pretty good. The Batavia Dam stretch of Fox River in Illinois is 0.05 miles long and is a class I-II(IV) section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. If you'll be staying in a hotel you're
in luck, lodging is available very near the river, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination.
