The starting point is not too far from Springfield, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Illinois are easier than the national norm, so you'd better keep in mind that lots of rivers here are good for beginners. The scenic beauty of Illinois and the cool fresh water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. This is an extremely     short section so it's not like you're gonna spend hours on the river in one stretch. The campgrounds here at Sangamon are pretty good. There are nice comfortable hotels here, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car.
