La Salle
county,
Troy Grove Blacktop to Little Vermilion section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II 2.8 miles
The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Illinois are often more forgiving than in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. The Troy Grove Blacktop to Little Vermilion stretch of Tomahawk Creek in La Salle County is 2.8 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II section. The natural beauty of La Salle County and the water flowing gracefully down Tomahawk Creek are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. Getting some good exercise
and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are not so many other good rivers for that around here. This is a bit of a short stretch so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in
a few times. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Ottawa-Streator, as you can see on the road map further down. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. Lodging is available near the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set.
