  The average Iowa whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master than those in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. The wonderful Polk County scenery and the cool fresh water beats anything. There are no other stretches to paddle along Raccoon River than the Walnut Woods SP Ledges stretch. This is an extremely short stretch so you'll
    have to walk back to the start over and over. The put-in is not too far from Des Moines, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. This stretch of Raccoon River in Polk County is 0.1
miles long and has been rated as a class I-II section by American Whitewater. There are plenty of hotels here if you want to spend a night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. Getting a good workout and spending some quality time in nature will make you glad you came.

Walnut Woods State Park is both
 
great and delightful, and it's close to Raccoon River; the cheerful people of West Des Moines like to hang out close by. For the period of the summer here at Raccoon River, high temperatures commonly reach the 80's; the nighttime is somewhat colder of course, mostly in the 60's. High temperatures throughout the winter are normally in the 20's; overnight lows in the 0's for Raccoon River. Raccoon River gets a common amount of precipitation. The month with most of the rain is June, and January on the other hand is the driest.
