Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often easier than elsewhere, so you'd better keep in mind that many runs in this state are very easy. The put-in location is a short drive from Somerset, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The Kentucky 461 to Cumberland River stretch of Buck Creek in Kentucky is 34 miles long and has been rated as a class II section by American Whitewater. A section like this is is of course not run in a single day, so better bring your camping gear along. Great exercise and a chance to spend
some time outdoors are great attractions for lots of people. The Cumberland Plateau Mountains scenery is wonderful. The beautiful scenery of Kentucky and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream beats anything. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby
campground. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a large number of paddling places. The Kentucky 461 to Cumberland River stretch is the only paddling stretch along Buck Creek.
Briefly about the general area: The high level of precipitation makes Buck Creek a quite wet site; of all the months in a year May is the one
with the most rain, and the driest month is October. Peter Cave Hollow is near Buck Creek and is a tremendous site. For the period of the summertime months at Buck Creek temperatures are mostly in the 80's. Once the sun is down it descends down to the 60's. Through the wintertime the highs are generally in the 40's, and winter nights come with lows in the 20's to Buck Creek.
