The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Somerset, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. This stretch of Buck Creek is 34 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II section. The natural beauty of Kentucky and the playfulness of the water make the trip here worthwhile. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. The campgrounds here at Buck Creek are pretty good. Plateau Mountains is a great experience. Great exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will make you glad you came. There are no other sections to paddle along Buck Creek than the Kentucky 461 to Cumberland River section. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some
kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good spots. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Kentucky are often easier than in other states, so keep in mind that lots of rivers here are good for beginners. Now this is a pretty long section, so better bring your camping gear along.
Briefly about the general area: Lots of rain falls at Buck Creek; most of the rain falls during May while October is usually the driest month. All through the days of summer at Buck Creek temperatures are ordinarily in the 80's,
and all through summer nights temperatures are in the 60's. The wintertime comes with highs in the 40's, and after the sun is down throughout the wintertime temperatures at Buck Creek drop into the 20's. Near Buck Creek you come across Peter Cave Hollow which is a fine spot to visit.
