This section of Buck Creek is 34 miles long and is a class II section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The wonderful Pulaski County scenery and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are reasons enough to come here and paddle. If you're coming from Somerset it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The Kentucky 461 to Cumberland River stretch is the only paddling stretch along Buck Creek. The nearby hotels are a bit away from
the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Great exercise and spending some quality time in nature are great attractions for lots of people. The campgrounds here at Buck Creek are pretty good. The Cumberland Plateau Mountains scenery is wonderful.
A stretch of this length does require some preparations, perfect for a real wilderness adventure. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Kentucky tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling places.
Briefly about the general area: During the warm months here at Buck Creek, high temperatures ordinarily get into the 80's. When the night sets in temperatures
drop down into the 60's. The wintertime comes with highs in the 40's, and nighttime lows during the wintertime for Buck Creek tend to be in the 20's. Peter Cave Hollow is in close proximity to Buck Creek and is a tremendous place. Buck Creek is a wet site that gets lots of rainfall; most of the rain falls throughout May, and the driest of the months is October.
