This stretch of Cumberland River in Kentucky is 11 miles long and it is classified as a class II-III section by American Whitewater. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. The wonderful
Kentucky scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water beats anything. This stretch is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so why not pack your sleeping bag too. There are nice comfortable hotels here, but if you don’t have reservations you might end
up sleeping in your car. The beautiful Cumberland Plateau Mountains scenery is an added bonus. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling places. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Corbin, as you can see on the road map further down. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are sure to keep you coming back for more. The campgrounds here at Cumberland River are pretty good. There are plenty of other sections in this river
system that can be paddled as well.
Briefly about the general area: If you're here, you might as well check out Broad Gap Hollow; don't leave Cumberland River without first paying a visit to Dog Slaughter Falls. If you come to this river you will have a good time for
sure. So much fun stuff to do in the Cumberland Plateau Mountains, not sufficient time. Go for a hike on the Bark Camp Trail; fine hiking is available along the Cumberland Falls Trail Number Two. Cumberland River is a quite wet place typically with lots of rainfall; the month
of May is the wettest with most of the rain while October is the month with the least amount of precipitation. For the duration of the warmest time of the year at Cumberland River highs are mostly in the 80's. All through the moonlight hours it's frequently in the 60's.
