If you're coming from Corbin it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, as you can see on the road map further down. The natural beauty of Whitley/ McCreary County and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. This stretch of Cumberland River in Whitley/ McCreary County is 11 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as
a class II-III section. There are so many sections to paddle in this river system, the Cumberland Falls to Laurel River section is just one of many. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. Whitewater paddling here in the Cumberland Plateau Mountains is a great experience.
If you'll be staying in a hotel you're in luck, lodging is available very near the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Kentucky are easier than the national norm, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots. This stretch has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff. hanging out with mother nature will have you coming back for more.
Briefly about the general area: Going for a hike on the Bark Camp Trail is always a fine adventure; nearby Broad Gap Hollow is a delightful place to go. This river is so wonderful. Cumberland River frequently
gets much precipitation; all through May this area sees the most rain, and the driest of the months is October. High temperatures at Cumberland River during the summertime are in the 80's with overnight lows in the 60's. For the period of the wintertime highs are frequently
in the 40's, and nighttime lows at Cumberland River through the winter generally dip into the 20's. Man, is there a heap of exciting stuff to do in the Cumberland Plateau Mountains. Go for a hike on the Cumberland Falls Trail Number Two, and Dog Slaughter Falls is a great local attraction.
