I like this trip, except for the portage around the dam it's a great ride, and a good way to learn reading a river. We always go the entire 13 miles back to the outfitter, the second half is primarily flat water but a nice float. Says Lee Huffman
Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often easier than elsewhere, so don't forget that lots of rivers here are good for beginners. The Forks of Elkhorn US460 Bridge to Kentucky1900 stretch of Elkhorn Creek is 6 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II(III) section. The
scenic beauty of Franklin County and the water flowing gracefully down Elkhorn Creek will make you feel great. A bit of exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have people coming from far and near. The starting point is not too far from Frankfort, as you can see on the
road map further down. This is the only paddling stretch along Elkhorn Creek. On this section you do get some distance, suitable for an afternoon trip. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. Lodging is available near the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set.
Briefly about the general area: During the summer here at Elkhorn Creek, high temperatures usually reach the 80's, and through summer nights temperatures are in the 60's. The cold days of the wintertime come with highs in the 30's, and after
the sun is down throughout the wintertime temperatures at Elkhorn Creek drop into the 10's. The high level of rain makes Elkhorn Creek a relatively wet place; all through the month of May you get the most rain around here; the driest of the months is January.
