I like this trip, except for the portage around the dam it's a great ride, and a good way to learn reading a river. We always go the entire 13 miles back to the outfitter, the second half is primarily flat water but a nice float. Says Lee Huffman
The put-in location is a short drive from Frankfort, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The nature scenery of Franklin County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water will make you feel great. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Kentucky are easier
than the national norm, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. A bit of exercise and spending some quality time in nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. There are some good hotels near the river, but do book
a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. The Forks of Elkhorn US460 Bridge to Kentucky1900 section is the only paddling section along Elkhorn Creek. This stretch of Elkhorn Creek in Kentucky is 6 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II(III) section. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling places. On this section you do get some distance, it's good length for a morning
trip.
