Howard's Creek can be a dangerous creek due to fallen trees and fences. Howard's is famous for wood and wire in the flow. Howard's is NOT a beginner stream as this article seems to indicate. Says BG

The beautiful scenery of Kentucky and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream attract people from near and far. The starting location is a short drive from Lexington-Fayette, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. There's camping available near Howard's Creek. On this section you do get some
    distance, suitable for an afternoon trip. A bit of exercise and just being out on the river for a while will make you glad you came. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Kentucky are easier than the national norm, so better not forget that rivers here are less demanding. There
aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Howard's Creek doesn't have a lot of paddling sections, the Old Stone Church Road to Kentucky River section is the only one.
