Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Kentucky is often easier than elsewhere, so keep in mind that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. This section of Red River in Kentucky is 10.3 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class III section. The beautiful scenery of Wolfe County and the playfulness of the water attract people from near and far. This section is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so why not pack your sleeping bag too. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. The river winds through
the Cumberland Plateau Mountains and you get great scenery. There are no other stretches to paddle along Red River than the Kentucky 746 to Kentucky 715 stretch. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're
all set. The put-in location is a short drive from Mount Sterling, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. Getting your paddling muscles activated and spending some quality time in nature are sure to keep you coming back for more.
Briefly about the general area: There is a tremendous hiking trail close to Red River called the Swiftcamp Creek Trail, and Red-byrd Arch is a delightful site to take a look at while in the neighborhood. And that's not all the things to do here in the Cumberland Plateau Mountains. Going for
a hike on the Rock Bridge Trail is always a perfect adventure. The warmest time of the year at Red River comes with high temperatures in the 80's, and the overnight is fairly chillier of course, generally in the 60's. Through the wintertime this place gets highs in the 40's
with temperatures at Red River dipping down into the 10's during winter nights. Red River sees pretty high levels of rainfall; July is the wettest month with most rain; the driest month is October.
