This stretch of Red River in Wolfe County is 10.3 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class III section. The natural beauty of Wolfe County and the cool fresh water have people coming here. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Kentucky are often more forgiving than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are suitable for beginners. This is the only paddling section along Red River. The put-in location is a short drive from Mount Sterling, if you're not familiar with
the area there's a road map further down the page. A good workout and spending some quality time in nature will make you glad you came. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all
set. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. The beauty of the Cumberland Plateau Mountains is a great plus for this river. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so pack your camping stuff.
Briefly about the general area: So much entertaining stuff to do here in the Cumberland Plateau Mountains, too great to be true. There's good hiking along the Rock Bridge Trail. Don't leave Red River without first checking out Red-byrd Arch, and great hiking is available along the Swiftcamp Creek Trail. Summertime at Red River arrives
with high temperatures in the 80's. All through the dark hours of summer temperatures dip down into the 60's. Throughout the winter highs are in the 40's, and night lows all through the wintertime for Red River tend to be in the 10's. Red River is a rather wet place commonly with a good deal of rainfall; July is the wettest month with most rain while October is typically the driest month.
