The beautiful scenery of McCreary County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The put-in is not too far from Somerset, as you can see on the road map further down. This stretch of Roaring Paunch River is 3 miles long and has been rated as a class IV-V+ section by American Whitewater. The average Kentucky whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be easier to run than those in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many runs in this state are very easy. Great exercise
and just being out on the river for a while will have you coming back for more. The wild scenery of the Cumberland Plateau Mountains is great. No shortage of good hotels, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. You might be into whitewater rafting
or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this is an area with plenty of rivers for that. Roaring Paunch River doesn't have a lot of paddling sections, the Barthell to Big South Fork section is the only one. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. This is a short paddling stretch so no need to bring snacks.

popular thing to do around Roaring Paunch River; Laurel Creek Trail is a great local trail. Through the warmest time of the year at Roaring Paunch River highs are usually in the 80's. Once the sun is down it drops down to the 60's. The cold days of the winter come with highs in the 40's, and winter nights come with lows in the 20's to Roaring Paunch River.
