CLASS II-III(IV) 6 miles
This stretch of Rock Creek in Kentucky is 6 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II-III(IV) section of whitewater. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Somerset, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Kentucky is often easier than elsewhere, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. The beauty of the Cumberland Plateau Mountains is a great plus for this river. And of course, there are campgrounds
nearby. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. This is the only paddling stretch along Rock Creek. The scenic beauty of Kentucky and the water flowing gracefully
down Rock Creek are reasons enough to come here and paddle. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling rivers. Great exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, suitable for an afternoon trip.
Briefly about the general area: Paint Cliff is a splendid site to have a look at while in the neighborhood; you could always look at Poplar Spring Hollow.
Rock Creek gets a large amount of water; all through March this area sees the most rain; October meanwhile is the driest month. And if that's not enough there's plenty more entertaining stuff to do in the Cumberland Plateau Mountains. For the period of the long summer days
highs here at Rock Creek reach the 80's, and the nighttime is a tad chillier of course, frequently in the 60's. During the winter highs are in the 40's, and through the dark hours in the winter at Rock Creek temperatures descend to the 20's.
