The wild scenery of the Cumberland Plateau Mountains is great. The beautiful scenery of Kentucky and the water flowing gracefully down Russell Fork attract people from near and far. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just hanging out with mother nature will have you coming back for more. This is a bit of a short stretch so no need to bring snacks. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking,
either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots. The Gorge takeout to Elkhorn City stretch of Russell Fork is 2 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II(III) section. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. There are some
good stretches to paddle in this river system, the Gorge takeout to Elkhorn City stretch is one of them. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination.
Briefly about the general area: Whohoo, so many cool things in one place! The Cumberland Plateau Mountains is great!. Pool Point is in the neighborhood and always tremendous to take a look at; nearby you discover Skegg Gap which is a great site to have a look at. At Russell Fork during the summertime highs are in
the 80's. During the moonlight hours it's generally in the 50's. For the duration of the winter highs are in the 40's, and night lows in the 10's for Russell Fork. All the water falling down from the sky makes Russell Fork a wet place; through July this area sees the most rain, and the driest month of the year is October.
