CLASS II-III 6.8 miles
This stretch of Bear is 6.8 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II-III section. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, suitable for an afternoon trip. The beautiful White Mountains scenery is an added bonus. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking,
either way there are lots of good rivers for that around here. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have people coming from far and near. The Devils Horseshoe section is the only paddling section along Bear. The scenic beauty of Maine and the water
flowing gracefully down Bear make the trip here worthwhile. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set.
Briefly about the general area: This is such a great river. Screw Auger Falls is always fun to check out. Just can't get enough of the White Mountains. While you're here at Bear you can take a hike along the Table Rock Trail, and Bear is in the vicinity of Mother Walker Falls Gorge which is without doubt worth checking out. On a nice
day at Bear you can take a hike along the Old Speck Mountain Trail, and if you want to explore some out of the ordinary stuff, explore Lightning Ledge. Bear gets a typical amount of yearly rain; the month of August is the wettest with most of the rain, and the driest of the months
is February. Summertime highs at Bear generally tend to be in the 70's with night lows in the 50's. Highs through the winter are frequently in the 20's, and nighttime lows in the 0's for Bear.
