Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Maine is often easier than elsewhere, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere. The wonderful Oxford County scenery and the cool fresh water will make you feel great. On this section you do get some distance, good for a one day paddling trip. This is the only paddling section along Bear. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The campgrounds here at Bear are pretty good. A good workout and
just being out on the river for a while are great attractions for lots of people. This section of Bear is 6.8 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II-III section. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this area has
a large number of paddling rivers. Whitewater paddling here in the White Mountains is a great experience.
Briefly about the general area: Don't leave Bear without first going for a hike along the Table Rock Trail; some exciting geology is available here, Lightning Ledge is right here. Bear gets a typical amount of annual precipitation; August is when you get the most rain here, and the driest month of the year is February. This is such a great river. Nearby Mother Walker Falls Gorge is a good place to go if you're at Bear. You just can't envision
the amount of outdoors exciting things the White Mountains has to offer. Don't leave Bear without first paying a visit to Screw Auger Falls, and there's tremendous hiking along the Old Speck Mountain Trail. All through the months of summer, highs frequently are in the 70's at Bear.
Summer overnight lows descend down to the 50's. Through the wintertime highs are commonly in the 20's, and winter nights come with lows in the 0's to Bear.
