Maine whitewater - Crooked River, Oxford Cumberland County
Oxford Cumberland
county,
Scribners Mill to US 302 section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II-III 15 miles
My sister and I put in just below eddes falls this summer and kayaked all the way to sebago lake. Nice trip. Says Lynda
My friend Dan and I ran part of this section last summer. Instead of putting in at Scribner's Mill, we launched from Edes Falls, just above the Rapids. It was a good inroduction to whitewater. Dan flipped within the first five minutes, but being that the water is relatively shallow, he did little more than get wet on a hot summers day. The Route 302 bridge is a logical pull out spot. There is a large mass of debris blocking passage
of the river there. The only tricky part is that the walls of the riverband are steep and slippery, so it helps to have someone with you for the portage. Says Corey
Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Maine are easier than the national norm, so if you're visiting here
do keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less demanding. The natural beauty of Maine and the cool fresh water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way there are lots of good places for that around here. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just
hanging out with mother nature are great attractions for lots of people. This is not the only paddling stretch in this river system, there are others too. The Scribners Mill to US 302 stretch of Crooked River is 15 miles long and is a class II-III section of whitewater according
to American Whitewater. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Portland-South Portland, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so why not pack your camping stuff too.
