Maine whitewater - Crooked River, Oxford Cumberland County
Oxford Cumberland
county,
Scribners Mill to US 302 section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II-III 15 miles
My sister and I put in just below eddes falls this summer and kayaked all the way to sebago lake. Nice trip. Says Lynda
My friend Dan and I ran part of this section last summer. Instead of putting in at Scribner's Mill, we launched from Edes Falls, just above the Rapids. It was a good inroduction to whitewater. Dan flipped within the first five minutes, but being that the water is relatively shallow, he did little more than get wet on a hot summers day. The Route 302 bridge is a logical pull out spot. There is a large mass of debris blocking passage
of the river there. The only tricky part is that the walls of the riverband are steep and slippery, so it helps to have someone with you for the portage. Says Corey
The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Portland-South Portland, if you're not familiar with the area
there's a road map further down the page. The nature scenery of Maine and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water will make you feel great. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so keep in mind that rivers here are less demanding. This stretch has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so why not pack your camping stuff too. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these
hotels fill up quick. This stretch of Crooked River is 15 miles long and has been rated as a class II-III section by American Whitewater. Getting a good workout and spending some quality time in nature have people coming from far and near. Since you're on this site you are probably
into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of rivers for that. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby.
