Maine whitewater - Crooked River, Oxford Cumberland County
Oxford Cumberland
county,
Scribners Mill to US 302 section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II-III 15 miles
My friend Dan and I ran part of this section last summer. Instead of putting in at Scribner's Mill, we launched from Edes Falls, just above the Rapids. It was a good inroduction to whitewater. Dan flipped within the first five minutes, but being that the water is relatively shallow, he did little more than get wet on a hot summers day. The Route 302 bridge is a logical pull out spot. There is a large mass of debris blocking passage of the river there. The only tricky part is that the walls of the riverband are steep and slippery, so it helps to
have someone with you for the portage. Says Corey
The Scribners Mill to US 302 section of Crooked River in Oxford Cumberland County is 15 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II-III section of whitewater. If you're coming from Portland-South Portland
it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The beautiful scenery of Oxford Cumberland County and the water flowing gracefully down Crooked River will make you feel great. A bit of exercise and just hanging out with mother nature have a lot of people coming here. This is not the only paddling section in this river system, there are others too. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. This stretch has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so why not pack
your sleeping bag too. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of rivers for that. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you don’t
have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Maine is often easier than elsewhere, so keep in mind that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere.
