The beautiful scenery of Somerset County and the playfulness of the water make the trip here worthwhile. The Spencer Falls to West Forks stretch of Dead River in Maine is 13.3 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II-III(IV) section. A good workout and spending some quality time in nature have a lot of people coming here. The campgrounds here at Dead River are pretty good. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car.
The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Maine are often more forgiving than in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. If you hurry you can run this section in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so
go ahead and pack your camp stove. This is one of a small number of paddling stretches in this river system, there are a few others too.
Briefly about the general area: Throughout the months of summer at Dead River highs are commonly in the 70's. When the night sets in temperatures sink down into the 50's. For the duration of the winter highs are ordinarily in the 20's, and after the sun is down throughout the winter temperatures at Dead River plunge into the-10's. The amount of rainfall that falls at Dead River is close to the national average; July is the wettest month with most rain; February is the month with the least moisture.
