Maine whitewater, Great Works River

York county, Brattle Street to Leighs Mill Pond section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS IV-V     1 miles
The starting location is a short drive from Portland-South Portland, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The Brattle Street to Leighs Mill Pond stretch of Great Works River in Maine is 1 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class IV-V section. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots. This section is very short so
you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. A bit of exercise and just hanging out with mother nature have a lot of people coming here. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Maine are often more
forgiving than in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. There are a few other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. The scenic beauty of York County
and the water flowing gracefully down Great Works River are reasons enough to come here and paddle.

Briefly about the general area:
Vaughan Woods Memorial State Park is a wonderful site to go if you're at Great Works River; a fine beach nearby is Foss Beach. Here at Great Works River you'll most likely meet some people from South Berwick; Odiorne State Park is worth a visit. The surroundings of this river have so much to offer. If you're looking for a beach close to Great Works River, we recommend Rye North Beach. All the water falling down from the sky makes Great Works River a wet location.
