Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often easier than elsewhere, so you'd better keep in mind that many runs in this state are very easy. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a large number of paddling places. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have people coming from far and near. A stretch of this length does require
some preparations, perfect for a real wilderness adventure. This stretch of Machias River is 32 miles long and it is classified as a class I-III section by American Whitewater. Machias River doesn't have a lot of paddling sections, the Big Machias Lake to Aroostook River section
is the only one. The wonderful Washington Hancock County scenery and the water flowing gracefully down Machias River are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. The campgrounds here at Machias River are pretty good.
Briefly about the general area: All through the summer months, highs generally are in the 70's at Machias River while night lows are typically in the 50's. Throughout the winter the highs are generally in the 10's while the cold winter nights at Machias River are in the-10's. Machias River is a good site of common rain;
through August this area sees the most rain; February meanwhile is the driest month. The Webster Brook Tote Road is a glorious hiking trail in close proximity to Machias River.
