The Fifth Machias Lake to Maine 9 section of Machias River in Washington County is 40 miles long and is a class I-III section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so better not forget that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. A bit of exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will have you coming back for more. The
scenic beauty of Washington County and the water flowing gracefully down Machias River make the trip here worthwhile. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way there are lots of good rivers for that around here. A stretch of this
length does require some preparations, so it looks like you will be camping out. The Fifth Machias Lake to Maine 9 stretch is one of a few paddling stretches in this river system. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car.
