The wonderful Aroostook / Penobscot County scenery and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. This stretch of Mattawamkeag River in Aroostook / Penobscot County is 34.2 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class I-II section of whitewater. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to
drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good spots. The average Maine whitewater rafting or kayaking river
tends to be easier to run than those in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. A bit of exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. The Haynesville to Kingman section is one of many paddling sections in this river system. A stretch of this length does require some preparations, perfect for a real wilderness adventure.
