The Old Town 2nd Dam to Veazie Dam section of Penobscot River in Maine is 6 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-III section. If you're coming from Bangor it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The beautiful scenery of Penobscot County and the cool fresh water will make you feel great. There are some good hotels near the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Whether you're whitewater
rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling spots. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. On this section you do get some distance, good for a one day paddling trip. There are a few other sections in this river system that can be
paddled as well. Getting some good exercise and spending some quality time in nature are great reasons to come.
Briefly about the general area: Penobscot River gets a large amount of water; November is the month that gets the most rain, and the driest of the months is February. Throughout the warm days of summer here at Penobscot River, high temperatures regularly reach the 70's with nighttime lows in the 50's.
