If you're coming from Bangor it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The beautiful scenery of Penobscot County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream have people coming here. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more forgiving, so you'd better keep in mind that rivers here are less demanding. The Old Town 2nd Dam to Veazie Dam section of Penobscot River is 6 miles long and is
a class I-III section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. This is one of a small number of paddling sections in this river system, there are a few others too. This stretch has has enough mileage, good for a one day paddling trip. Whether you're whitewater rafting or
kayaking this is an area with plenty of spots for that. A bit of exercise and just hanging out with mother nature have a lot of people coming here. If you'll be staying in a hotel you're in luck, lodging is available very near the river, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby.
Briefly about the general area: Summertime highs at Penobscot River mostly tend to be in the 70's, and throughout the night it cools down to the 50's. The cold days of the winter
come with highs in the 20's, and throughout the dark hours in the winter at Penobscot River temperatures fall to the 0's. Penobscot River is a rather wet place typically with a great deal of rain; the month with most of the rain is November while February is typically the driest month.
