The beautiful scenery of Hancock Waldo County and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Maine you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so you'd better keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. This stretch of Penobscot River in Hancock Waldo County is 14 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-III section. There are some good sections to paddle in this river system, the South Orrington to Sandy Point
section is one of them. There are plenty of hotels here if you want to spend a night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. This section has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff. Great exercise and just
being out on the river for a while are sure to keep you coming back for more. The put-in location is a short drive from Bangor, as you can see on the road map further down. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of places for that.
Briefly about the general area: You are in the vicinity of Collins Cove while you're here at Penobscot River. Penobscot River sees pretty high levels of rainfall; November is when you get the
most rain here, and the driest of the months is July. For the duration of the days of summer highs here at Penobscot River get into the 70's. Once the sun is down it falls down to the 50's. The winter comes with highs in the 30's, and during the dark hours in the wintertime at Penobscot River temperatures dip to the 10's.
