This section of Penobscot River is 14 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-III section. The scenic beauty of Hancock Waldo County and the playfulness of the water will make you feel great. The campgrounds here at Penobscot River are pretty good. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots. There are plenty of hotels here if you want to spend a night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. The put-in location is a short drive from Bangor, there's
a road map further down the page with more info on that. If you hurry you can run this stretch in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more forgiving,
so if you're not from around here don't forget that many runs in this state are very easy. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while have people coming from far and near.
Briefly about the general area: High temperatures at Penobscot River during the days of summer are in the 70's while overnight lows are typically in the 50's. High temperatures all through the winter are normally in the 30's, and after the sun is down during the wintertime temperatures at Penobscot River dip into the 10's. All the water falling
down from the sky makes Penobscot River a wet place; November is when you get the most rain here while July is the month with the least amount of precipitation. Why not visit Collins Cove also while you're here.
