The put-in location is a short drive from Bangor, as you can see on the road map further down. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Maine tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so better not forget that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere. This section of Penobscot River in Hancock Waldo County is 14 miles long and it is classified as a class I-III section by American Whitewater. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors have people coming from far and near. This river system has a few good paddling sections and the
South Orrington to Sandy Point section is one of them. There are many good hotels to choose from, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general
area you'll find lots of paddling spots. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so why not pack your sleeping bag too. The scenic beauty of Hancock Waldo County and the playfulness of the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle.
Briefly about the general area: Throughout the warm days of summer highs here at Penobscot River reach the 70's, and during summer nights temperatures are in the 50's. During the wintertime highs are generally in the 30's; overnight lows through the wintertime for Penobscot River tend to be
in the 10's. If you're here at Penobscot River, do take a visit to Collins Cove. The high level of precipitation makes Penobscot River a relatively wet location; November is the month that gets the most rain; the driest month of the year is July.
