  The wonderful Maine scenery and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream attract people from near and far. If you're coming from Bangor it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, as you can see on the road map further down. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Maine tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so keep in mind that quite a few of the sections in this state are pretty easy. There arenít
    any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you donít have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds
nearby. There are plenty of other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. A bit of exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. This stretch of Penobscot River - East Branch in Maine is 38 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class III-V section. A stretch this long is of course too much for a one day trip, perfect for a real wilderness adventure. Whether you're whitewater  
rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of spots for that.

Briefly about the general area:
Good hiking is available along the Jerry Pond Tote Road, and a short tour to Spencer Rips is always worthwhile. Don't leave Penobscot River - East Branch without first going for a hike along the Spring Brook Trail. A journey to Penobscot River - East Branch wouldn't be complete without taking a look at Bowlin Falls. Summertime highs at Penobscot River - East Branch regularly tend to be in the 70's, and the overnight is a tad cooler of course, mostly in the 50's. For the duration of the wintertime highs are typically in the 20's while the cold winter nights at Penobscot River - East Branch are in the 0's.
