The wonderful Piscataquis County scenery and the water flowing gracefully down Piscataquis River are reasons enough to come here and paddle. If you're coming from Bangor it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more forgiving, so you'd better keep in mind that lots of rivers here are good for beginners. County is 5.4 miles long and it is classified as a class II-III section by American Whitewater. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good rivers. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river
if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. This is a pretty decent length section, it's perfect for a one day trip. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. This river system has a few good paddling stretches and the Medford to Maxfield section is one of them.
Briefly about the general area: Hiking along the Scutaze Trail is splendid fun, and going for a hike along the Hardy Pond Trail will let you absorb the natural beauty of this area. Summertime
