  The beautiful scenery of Franklin County and the water flowing gracefully down Sandy River beats anything. The Phillips to Fairbanks Bridge stretch of Sandy River in Maine is 17 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-II section. This river system is full of great paddling stretches, the Phillips to Fairbanks Bridge stretch is just one of them. If you hurry you can run this stretch in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so why not pack your sleeping bag too. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but do book a room
    before you come because it is a very popular destination. Getting some good exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great attractions for lots of people. The starting location is a short drive from Lewiston-Auburn, as you can see on the road map further down. Whitewater
rafting and kayaking spots in Maine tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so don't forget that rivers here are less demanding. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby.

Briefly about the general area:
Sandy River is a wet place that gets a good deal of precipitation; the wettest month of the year is generally November, that's the one that rains the most, and February is when it's the driest. High temperatures at Sandy River through the summer are in the 70's, and all through the night it cools down to the 50's. Highs during the wintertime are regularly in the 20's while Sandy River overnight low temperatures all through the winter are in the 0's.
