The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Maine are often more forgiving than in other states, so keep in mind that many runs in this state are very easy. The put-in location is a short drive from Bangor, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of places for that. Getting a good workout and just
    hanging out with mother nature are great reasons to come. The headwater to Penobscot River stretch is the only paddling stretch along Sunkhaze Stream. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels
fill up quick. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. This section has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so pack your camp stove.

Briefly about the general area:
Summer at Sunkhaze Stream arrives with high temperatures in the 70's. During the moonlight hours it's mostly in the 50's. Daytime highs all through the winter are in the 20's, and nighttime lows in the 0's for Sunkhaze Stream. Sunkhaze Stream usually gets a lot of rain; of all the months in a year November is the one with the most rain, and February on the other hand is the driest.
The Old Gold Mine Trail is a splendid hiking trail in close proximity to Sunkhaze Stream.
