This stretch of Swift River in Oxford County is 13 miles long and has been rated as a class II-III section by American Whitewater. The natural beauty of Maine and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are reasons enough to come here and paddle. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often easier than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. If you have the time you
can make this a two day trip, so pack your camp stove. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good rivers for that around here. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very
popular destination. A good workout and just being out on the river for a while have a lot of people coming here. This river system has a few good paddling sections and the Rt 17 Bridge to Mexico section is one of them. The beautiful White Mountains scenery is an added bonus.
Briefly about the general area: Throughout the warm days of summer at Swift River temperatures are frequently in the 70's. Once the sun is down it descends down to the 50's. Through the winter highs are in the 20's, and night lows in the-10's for Swift River. You just can't picture
the amount of outdoors exciting stuff the White Mountains has to offer. An average amount of precipitation falls at Swift River; the wettest month of the year is ordinarily August, that's the one that rains the most while February is the month with the least amount of precipitation. Hit the slopes at Black Mountain in the vicinity, and if the weather is fine, you can go for a hike along the Chimney Trail.
